A Mexican citizen suspected of transporting undocumented immigrants was injured in a traffic collision Wednesday morning.

Jose J. Saavedra, 22, of Acapulco was driving a stolen truck from Mexicali north on Wormwood Road north of Lyons Road when the accident occurred.

According to a California Highway Patrol press release, Saavedra was attempting to avoid detection by U.S. Border Patrol agents when he came upon a road that ended at a ditch.

Despite applying the brakes, Saavedra was unable to stop the vehicle in time and drove into the ditch, where the truck caught fire.

Saavedra was transported to El Centro Regional Medical center with moderate injuries and was arrested.

Two of the 10 undocumented immigrants Saavedra was allegedly transporting were also transported to ECRMC with minor injuries.

Jorge Villalobos, 27, of the state of Guanajuato, Mexico, sustained abrasions to his right leg in the collision.

Aurelio Mallipa, 44, of the state of Morelos, Mexico, sustained a contusion to his right shoulder.

All 10 undocumented immigrants were turned over to Border Patrol agents.
