Families raising funds for Sea World trip

February 23, 2001|By MARIO RENTERÍA, Staff Writer

WESTMORLAND — Parents of preschool children, with the help of the United Families Inc. here, are working together in an effort to raise money for a field trip to Sea World.

United Families Inc. is a state organization that provides a preschool program for children who need help with developmental growth. The program provides a curriculum that teaches children computer, social, developmental and language skills to prepare the kids for kindergarten and grade school.

Mary Cornejo, site supervisor for United Families Inc., said parents of the preschool children wanted to organize a field-trip for the children.

United Families Inc. got involved and has been helping the parents raise money for the trip.

The trip will be to Sea World in San Diego.

"We're looking for this field-trip so the children can learn about the different sea animals while enjoying the experience," said Cornejo.

She said those involved are trying to raise about $1,200, which is the cost of renting a commercial bus to take the children and one parent for each child to the park.

Cornejo said the parents have already staged some fund-raising events and plan to conduct more.

She said United Families Inc. is only providing support, guidance and assistance, not money.

She said there are about 29 children who would go on the trip if the money is raised.

People involved in the fundraising are seeking donations from various organizations and have been raising money by selling candy and doing things such as staging a Halloween carnival.

Barbecues in March will help raise more funds.

Those interested in helping or providing donations should contact Cornejo at 351-9457.
