Body of young male found in canal

February 23, 2001

HOLTVILLE — The body of a suspected undocumented immigrant was found near Drop Two of the All-American Canal on Thursday morning.

Investigators were withholding the release of the name of the victim, a 29-year-old male, until notification of relatives. Mexican voter registration documents with a photo found on the body helped identify the man, said Chief Deputy Coroner Sgt. Rick Macken.

"There was no sign of foul play to the decedent," Macken said.

It appears the man drowned, Macken said. Coroner investigators will conduct an autopsy Saturday to determine the exact cause of death, Macken said.

According to county Sheriff's Office logs, a call came into the agency from the Imperial Irrigation District at 7:21 a.m. about the body.

The body appeared to have been in the canal "a couple days," Macken said.
