Man found in wash likely was murdered

February 26, 2001

WINTERHAVEN — The body of an apparent homicide victim was found Sunday in a wash near Picacho Road and the All-American Canal.

The male body, thought to be that of a Caucasian, was discovered shortly before 3 p.m. by a person collecting cans or other objects in the area, said county Coroner's Office Investigator Gary Hayes.

Foul play is suspected in the death, Hayes said, although he declined to elaborate on what led investigators to make that conclusion.

The body's condition suggests it had not been in the area long, Hayes said.

Hayes said he did not know if the man had been killed at the site of discovery or if the body had been dumped there.

The investigation is ongoing. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
