February 26, 2001

BRAWLEY — Three Brawley residents were injured Saturday morning in a single-car accident when the steering wheel of the car in which they were traveling reportedly came off.

Ralph Galván, 25, was driving north at 7:20 a.m. on Hovley Road near Baughman Road at a speed of around 50 mph when, according to the California Highway Patrol, the vehicle's steering wheel "became detached from the steering column."

The vehicle drifted off the road's east shoulder and struck a power pole, the report states.

Galván received moderate injuries, including a bruised left knee and a cut on his left arm. Passengers Anthony Cortéz, 23, and Andy Santana, 22, received minor injuries. All were taken to Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley.

The report states none of the men was wearing a seat belt.
