CALEXICO — A man was killed and several people were injured here after the car the man was driving crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a van on Highway 111 Friday night.

Jose Leyva Adame, 45, was driving a compact car north on Highway 111 when his car crossed into the southbound lanes just north of Highway 98, colliding with the van about 11 p.m.

Adame, who has addresses in both Brawley and Guerrero, Mexico, died at the scene of the accident, county Coroner Investigator Gary Hayes said.

An autopsy performed Saturday determined Adame died from blunt impact injuries to his head, chest and abdomen, Hayes said.

Adame was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, Hayes said.

Several people in the van were transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries, Hayes said.

Further information about the collision or those injured was not available from the Calexico Police Department Saturday night.
