On Feb. 15 My Favorite Things, the preschool of First United Methodist Church in El Centro, held an unusual and effective program for the parents of the children in the preschool.
Many of the parents had expressed concerns about whether their child would be ready for kindergarten in the fall. We invited four kindergarten teachers from various schools in the Valley who have outstanding reputations in their communities to speak to us about kindergarten readiness. We were pleased to have Alexa Horne, McCabe Union Elementary; Barbara Howington, Desert Garden School in El Centro; Margaret Knox, Hedrick School in El Centro; and Edna Clary, Ben Hulse School in Imperial. These dedicated women gave their time because they are devoted to education and they want all children to be successful in school.
They had wonderful suggestions for our director, Adriana Cazares, and the parents. All of us came away from the panel discussion aware that kindergarten in this new age of strict standards is no longer just for play and socialization. We wish to thank these teachers very much for giving us their time and for all the good ideas they shared with us. The evening was such a success that we plan to hold another panel discussion on the same topic next year.
