For reasons yet unknown, a motorcycle heading east on Interstate 8 west of El Centro went off the road Saturday afternoon, ejecting and killing its rider.

At 1:57 p.m. Saturday, a man was riding a large touring motorcycle in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 8 about one mile east of Dunaway Road, reported California Highway Patrol Sgt. Mike Berger.

The victim was identified as Frank Lee Risley, 69, of Missoula, Mont., said county Coroner Investigator Gary Hayes.

The motorcycle traveled off the roadway to the south side of the interstate, throwing Risley from the vehicle when it hit the berm between the pavement and the dirt, Berger said.

The motorcycle came to rest against a wire fence running parallel to the roadway, Berger said.

Risley was wearing his helmet at the time of the accident, Berger said.

An autopsy to determine the cause of death is scheduled for Tuesday, Hayes said.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident, Berger said.
