Former restaurant, bar gutted by fire

March 05, 2001

BOMBAY BEACH — A former bar and restaurant were damaged this morning when a fire, thought to be arson, tore through the structure.

Shortly before 2 a.m., Niland Fire Department responded to the fire at 9532 Avenue A, formerly the Tradewinds bar and restaurant, said fire Chief Mike Aleksick.

The blaze, which was under control by 2:31 a.m., gutted the bar area and caused heat and smoke damage to the restaurant, Aleksick said.

Aleksick said arson is suspected.

Fire officials found at least four points of origin for the blaze. Flammable fluids were discovered at two of the points, and flammable materials, in this case paper, were found at the other two, Aleksick said.
