IMPERIAL — Police were searching for a hit-and-run suspect this morning, one day after a motorist drove through a red light at Highway 86 and struck a car, injuring its driver.

Maria Alvarez, 33, of Imperial suffered what police described as moderate injuries in the collision that occurred shortly before 11 a.m. Monday where the highway intersects with 15th Street.

According to Imperial police Officer Joe Garibaldi, Alvarez, who was driving east on 15th Street, was crossing the intersection after the light signal turned green.

A green compact car being driven south on the highway ran a red light and collided with Alvarez's car, police said.

Police were continuing to follow up on leads this morning.

Alvarez was taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center, but no information on her condition was available by presstime this morning.

Imperial police are asking that anyone with information on the incident contact the Police Department at 355-4327.
