IMPERIAL — A woman attempting to cross Highway 86 late Monday was struck by a pickup and suffered a fractured skull, according to Imperial police Capt. Gary Cox.

Debra Ray, 47, of Imperial had left the California Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta and was attempting to cross the highway at its intersection with Second Street when she was struck shortly after 10 p.m.

Ray had crossed the northbound lanes and stopped in the center divider. As she tried to cross the southbound lanes she moved into the path of a pickup being driven by Maricruz Rodriguez, 35, also of Imperial.

After being hit, Ray's head struck the pickup's windshield and she suffered a fractured skull, Cox said. County fire officials added Ray had lacerations to her face and her body.

She was taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center and then was flown by helicopter to a San Diego hospital.

Cox said he was unsure to which hospital Ray was flown. He also had no information on her condition.

Information also was not available by press time this morning from El Centro Regional officials.

Cox said the accident is under investigation. He said police have not yet determined the speed at which Rodriguez was driving.
