Big-rig rolls in attempt to avoid collision

March 07, 2001|By MARIO RENTERÍA, Staff Writer

A Mexicali resident was injured Tuesday when the tractor-trailer rig he was driving rolled over after he attempted to avoid a collision on a rain-slickened Dogwood Road near the Interstate 8 off-ramp.

El Centro police said Julio Fuentes, 44, was traveling north on Dogwood Road near the Interstate 8 overpass about 11:45 a.m. when the accident happened.

Witnesses told police Fuentes was traveling at an unsafe speed when another vehicle exiting the interstate attempted to turn onto Dogwood Road. Police said they were told the driver of the second vehicle, whose identity was not available this morning, made a complete stop before turning onto Dogwood.

Fuentes tried to slow the big rig to avoid hitting the second vehicle from behind but skidded on the wet roadway and his rig rolled over onto the side of the off-ramp.

Fuentes was taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center. A hospital spokesperson said Tuesday that Fuentes was in stable condition and that he was transported to a hospital in San Diego.

Neither the name of the hospital to which he was transported nor his condition was available this morning.
