IMPERIAL — The principal of Westside Elementary School will be honored and a new interim principal for Frank Wright Intermediate School will be named when the Imperial Unified School District Board of Trustees meets here Thursday.

Nancy Rood, an Imperial Valley resident since 1984 and both a teacher and principal at Westside Elementary School in western Imperial County, has been named the Elementary Principal of the Year for Imperial County's region by the Association of California School Administrators. She will receive her award Thursday.

Rood was selected from nominations of Valleywide principals by a special committee. Along with teaching a second- and third-grade class, she has served as principal at Westside Elementary for the last eight years.

The award is based on leadership with an emphasis on academic achievement, parent involvement at the school and involvement in the local community. Barbara Layaye, district superintendent, described Rood as "a dynamic individual who is student and academically oriented. She is very well respected in the community."

Board members are expected to nominate Xenophone Jones to replace Don Hopper as the interim principal at Frank Wright Intermediate School. Hopper will be returning to his hometown of Modesto.

Hopper has been the interim principal since January 2001, replacing John Marshall, who was moved to a classroom position in December after receiving notice of unprofessional conduct by the school board.

Jones has had experience as an administrator, having previously served as deputy principal at Brawley Union High School, as well as vice principal at Imperial High School.

"We are familiar with him, and he does an outstanding job," Layaye said.

Imperial Unified is accepting applications for the position of principal at Frank Wright Intermediate. The closing date is April 12.

The school board meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month in the district conference room, 219 N. E St. in Imperial.
