Voice: The inmates running the asylum are the establishment

March 08, 2001

The shortest verse in the Bible is — Jesus wept.

The shortest drama of "government in one act" is:

Scene 1: Do something, even if it's wrong.

Scene 2: They did.

Scene 3: I was.

The epilogue, which is recited after the curtain falls, is longer than the drama itself, i.e.

— "With a sly wink and a smile, the beguiling one slithered off into the grass.

— At least it was short.

"Beware of snakes in the grass."

Comments concerning this drama have included:

— If we didn't have bad luck, we wouldn't have any luck at all.

— At least it was short.

— Have you ever noticed that there seem to be more snakes when the "inmates are running the asylum?"

— Speaking of inmates, they claim that "board members playing house with government" are the most dangerous kind.

— Yep, it's right up there with children playing with loaded guns.

Note: "Inmates running the asylum" means "locker room" government carried on behind closed doors. "Locker room government" is government by committee.

The "inmates" are the "establishment," which includes board members as well as management and staff. The inmates and the snakes are one and the same.

Now you know.
