Voice: Why did Press play down Bush recount victory?

March 08, 2001

Hey, what happened to that Florida recount thing? "Big Media" assured us that they wouldn't "rest until they found the REAL president."

So there I was, flipping through the Feb. 26 Imperial Valley Press, when a little article back on page A6 caught my eye. The title of this little tidbit read, "Miami-Dade recount gives Gore total of 49 votes."

With hands in pockets and heads hung low, big media begrudgingly and quietly admitted hiring a big accounting firm, instructing it to count all those funky "chads" and the so-called 10,644 "uncounted" ballots, and yet they still came up short." … He would not have gained enough votes to win the presidential race."

Why would our local paper play down such an important story by burying it in the back of the paper? Did they hope that most of us would overlook this article, keeping us ignorant of the facts so we would continue to question President Bush's legitimacy? If this firm had dug up enough votes to overcome Mr. Bush, you can bet that we would be hearing it, watching it, and reading about it for months. But the liberal media isn't biased. (Yeah right.)

I'm not saying that the "Bush-haters" should give him respect now that he is our proven leader. I don't have to. President Bush will earn it.
