OCOTILLO — A Valley Center man suffered major injuries Thursday after the vehicle he was driving struck a tractor-trailer rig near here.

At 2:37 p.m., José Suarez Martinez, 56, was traveling east on State Route 2 at 50 mph when he approached a 90-degree curve in the road, according to a California Highway Patrol report. At the same time, Ocotillo resident Lena John, 37, was driving the truck north on S-2 at about 30-35 mph, just entering the curve.

"(Suarez) saw that he was traveling too fast for the curve and locked up his brakes," the report states. "He then skidded into the opposing traffic lane and struck the left side of (John's) trailer."

Suarez was trapped in his vehicle for about 30 minutes before being transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center.

His medical condition was not available from the hospital by presstime this morning.

John reportedly did not suffer injuries, and both were wearing safety equipment.
