Tigers take fifth at Desert Classic

PALM DESERT — In a bit of a preview for the Imperial Valley League baseball season, Imperial High edged Brawley Union 7-6 to take fifth place in the 16-team Desert Classic tournament here Saturday.

Tied 6-6 in the sixth, Imperial's Bryan Seeger connected on a hit and scored Brenden Lopez for the go-ahead run.

Aaron Hartsock retired the side in the seventh and wrapped up the win for Imperial.

Brett Cochran led the Tigers, going 3-for-4 with a solo home run. Chris Mazeroll finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and Seeger chipped in two doubles and two RBIs.

"Out of all the teams, we were the only division IV team and the smallest. So to take fifth is a big accomplishment,"

For Brawley, Calvin Williams and Brandon Burnett both finished with a double and two RBIs.

Added Estes: "Our kids really wanted this game. I think they wanted to prove that this team does belong in the IVL."


Brawley (2-2 overall) will host La Quinta at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday. The Tigers (3-1) host Calipatria at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Imperial 5, Hemet 4

PALM DESERT — The Imperial High School baseball team recorded its second win of the Desert Classic tournament with a 5-4 victory over Hemet here Friday.

Chris Mazeroll led the Tigers with an RBI double. Stewart Harvey chipped in a two-hit, two-run performance for Imperial.

D.J. Hastings picked up the win, pitching six innings, allowing six hits and striking out seven.

Yuma 3, Central 1

YUMA — The Central Union High baseball team lost its second game of the year, falling 3-1 to Yuma High here Friday.

The Spartans' only run came on a sacrifice fly by Matt Baker that scored Kevin Betz.

Up 1-0, Central surrendered three runs in the fourth inning.

Said Spartan coach Dave Middleton: "On offense we put the ball in play, but we just didn't find the holes. It was a good, clean game and we held our own against a team that's now 8-0."

Central (0-2) will next play in the Cibola tournament in Yuma at 3 p.m. Thursday.

Palo Verde 19, Calipatria 1

BLYTHE — Palo Verde High had little trouble disposing of Calipatria High, winning 19-1 here Friday.

Calipatria will play at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Antelope High in Wellton, Ariz.
