Southwest girls take third at Yuma Invitational

YUMA — The Southwest High girls track and field team took third place in the Yuma Invitational here Saturday, finishing with 82 points.

The Southwest boys finished fifth in the 11-team meet tallying 47 points.

Leading the Eagle girls was Erica Holmes, who won the 100 meters in 13.21 seconds. Holmes also took second in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 2 inches and took third place in the 200 meters in 27.99. Holmes teamed with Monica Gamboa, Jackie Gomez and Stephanie Conant to take third in the 4x100 meters.

Gamboa finished third in the 100 in 13.55 and took second in the 400 in 1 minute, 5.75 seconds. Gamboa teamed with Conant, Judith Kaye and Erika Talley to finish third in the 4x400.

Southwest's Jennifer Black took second in the 300 hurdles (54.17) and fourth in the 100 hurdles (19.13). Talley took second in the 800 in 2:36.83 and Denisse Moreno rounded out the Eagle medalists, finishing third in the 400 in 1:07.37.


On the boys side for Southwest, Sal Acevedo won the 3,200 in 10:17.24 with teammate Garrett Bishop taking third in 10:39.73.

Jose Luis Salazar took second in the triple jump for the Eagles with a leap of 39 feet and placed third in the 110 hurdles in 16:04.

Justin McCullough took third in 400 in 53.02 and teamed with Kenn Bonano, Eric Holmes and Phillip Zamuido to place third in the 4x400 relay.

The Central Union boys finished fourth with Brawley Union taking sixth. Calexico finished eighth and Holtville took ninth.

On the girls side Brawley finished fifth followed by Calexico in sixth. Holtville placed ninth and Central took 10th.

All local teams involved will next compete in the Central relays Saturday in El Centro.
