Voice: Allen is the only IID director in the right on canal issue

March 13, 2001

I feel I must reply to the unwarranted attack on Imperial Irrigation District Director Lloyd Allen in a letter in your newspaper.

When all but one of the directors we elected to manage the critical water and power affairs of the IID have chosen instead to provide protection for illegal immigrants and apparently nullify the regulations concerning the canal and our border, it is time to speak out.

Has everyone forgotten that it is illegal to enter the canal, which is posted to that effect? That there are laws regulating entry and residence in this country, as in every other nation, including Mexico? I presume it was on this basis that Director Allen voted against an action whose only possible result would be to multiply the attempts to enter the country illegally.

The letter written insists these illegal entrants are "only trying to better themselves." So are drug and alien smugglers and all those who engage in every illegal act undertaken for gain. I cannot believe that the majority who followed the rules in coming here, who earn their living honorably and have become respected, could advocate the bizarre action taken by the board.

Remember, members of this board are the people entrusted with the most critical issues that have ever faced Imperial Valley. It should be a matter of common sense to expect elected officials to address the legitimate business for which they were elected. Their personal and social agendas should not be a matter for board action.
