BRAWLEY — Brawley native, Division 4 Imperial Irrigation District, former mayor of this city and real estate agent Stella Mendoza was selected Woman of the Year for the 80th Assembly District.

Mendoza was selected for the honor by Assemblyman Dave Kelley.

"I chose Stella Mendoza not for any one reason but for the many contributions she has made, and continues to make, to her community," Kelley said in a prepared statement. "Stella is a wonderful example of what anyone … can do to make a difference, if they so choose, and I am proud that she accepted my nomination of her for this recognition."

Mendoza said she was pleased to be chosen.

"I said ‘Wow, great,' " she said this morning.

Mendoza traveled to Sacramento on Sunday. At the ceremony Monday she was escorted by Kelley into the Assembly chambers in Sacramento to the Assembly speaker's desk, where she was presented with a resolution, and a certificate signed by the lieutenant governor. As the women walked down the aisle, brief biographies of each was read. Photos were taken.

Seventy-nine other women were similarly honored.

"I felt awed by all these women," Mendoza said. "I was in good company."

Mendoza is president of the Women's Community Club of Brawley, a member of Brawley's Lions Club, the Soroptimists Club of Brawley and vice chairwoman of the Calipatria State Prison Citizen's Advisory Committee. She is married and has three sons.

Previous to Mendoza, Holtville residents Susan M. Hawk and Colleen Ludwig were similarly honored, in 1995 and 1990, respectively.
