Brawley girl swimmers win, earn CIF berths

PALM DESERT — The Brawley Union High School swim team split its meet against Palm Desert here Monday, with the Brawley girls winning 89-81 and the boys falling 116-49.

Leading the Wildcat girls (2-1) was Brooke Pace, winning the 100-yard freestyle in 58.53 seconds and the 100 breaststroke in 1 minute, 13.06 seconds. Pace teamed with Marianne Wenzel, Stephanie Luckey and Tracy King to win the 400 freestyle relay in 4:13.72. Pace and Luckey hooked up with Jennifer Cardenas and Lauren Roberts to win the 200 medley relay in 2:01.45.

Cardenas took second in the 100 butterfly (1:04.34) and the 200 individual medley (2:25.09). The individual medley time qualified her for CIF San Diego Section post-season action.

Getting Brawley's other victory was King in the 200 medley in 2:19.35. King teamed with Wenzel, Cardenas and Roberts to take second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:51.94), a time also good enough for the post-season.

On the boys side Spencer Kellogg led the Wildcats (1-1), taking second in the 50 freestyle (25.73) and the 100 freestyle (56.44). Kellog teamed with Mark McConnell, Jeremy Schmidt and Robbie Overstreet to take third in the 200 medley relay (1:44.91) and qualify for the postseason.

Overstreet finished second in both the 200 freestyle (2:12.91) and the 100 breaststroke (1:15.62), with McConnell taking second in the 100 backstroke (1:12.78).

Brawley will host Coachella Valley High at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.
