March 14, 2001|By KELLY GRANT, Staff Writer

A man suspected of killing a Winterhaven man last month was booked into Imperial County jail Tuesday after being transferred from the Yuma jail where he had been held for two weeks.

Michael Steven Phillips, 48, of Winterhaven, is held on one count of murder in the death of Jay Bee Brown, also of Winterhaven.

According to the Imperial County Sheriff's Office, Phillips was transferred into county jail shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday. As of press time today, he remained there without bail.

Brown's body was discovered Feb. 25 in a wash northwest of Winterhaven. An autopsy determined Brown died of multiple stab wounds to the head, neck and torso sustained early the morning his body was found or late the previous night.

Phillips was arrested that same week as Yuma police and Imperial County Sheriff's deputies acted on a tip leading them to Phillips' whereabouts in a Yuma residential neighborhood.
