March 15, 2001|By ANTHONY LONGORIA, Staff Writer

WESTMORLAND — The Brawley Union High School District board met in the Westmorland Union Elementary School library Wednesday night to accommodate Westmorland residents.

High school students from Westmorland attend Brawley High.

The district's three-member crisis intervention team updated the board on its security and emergency procedures should a crisis arise.

The team recently completed a series of classes at San Diego State University and has been certified in crisis intervention. The team is forming a committee to further explore crisis intervention solutions.

District Superintendent Garth Isom commended the staff for participation in the certification classes.

District Athletic Director Billy Brewer and parent volunteer Deirdre Morgan presented the board with the district's athletic handbook, which outlines guidelines for district athletic programs and policies.

In action, the board approved an honors/advanced placement class in environmental science for the 2001-02 school year.

The class is the first honors/AP class to be formed as part of a recent grant to offer more such classes, said Isom.

The board did a first reading to recognize an extended school day reading program to help students improve skills for academic achievement and to pass the high school exit exam.

The program, in its third week, has 40 students.
