March 15, 2001|By RICHARD MONTENEGRO, Staff Writer

CALEXICO — Three Orange County residents were arrested here after nearly 2,500 pounds of marijuana was found in an off-road vehicle trailer they were hauling into the United States.

U.S. Customs Service inspectors arrested driver Brian Allen Jones, 21, of San Clemente and passengers Mathew Jeremiah Daniel, 25, of Dana Point and Miranda Marchello Wert, 18, of San Clemente around 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

While the specific charges against the men were not available this morning, Customs stated in a press release the three were transported to the county jail.

Jones was driving a pickup pulling a trailer when the vehicle was remanded to secondary inspection at the downtown Calexico Port of Entry after a U.S. Immigration and Naturalization trained dog alerted its handler to the roof area of the trailer.

Customs officers, with the help of the INS and Calexico police, transported the trailer to the Calexico East Port of Entry, where a vehicle cargo and inspection system helped inspectors locate 442 wrapped packages of marijuana weighing 2,445 pounds.
