Free screenings, info available at Diabetes Day

IMPERIAL — The Casa De Mañana at the Imperial Valley Expo will be the site of a Diabetes Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Healthcare providers and the business community of the Imperial Valley, including the Imperial Valley chapter of the American Diabetes Association, are sponsoring the event.

A number of local physicians will be making presentations in Spanish and English. Honorary program chairmen are doctors Raymond Fink and Eric M. Gold, of Diabetes and Endocrine Associates of El Centro.

There is no admission charge and refreshments will be provided.

There will be free screening for diabetes.

Physicians who will be speaking include:

l Dr. Raymond Fink and Dr. Georges Argoud, endocrinologists and diabetes specialists

l Dr. Magid Mani, an ophthalmologist, who will discuss eye disease as it relates to diabetes

l Dr. Vachaspathi Palakodeti and Dr. Jose Rocamora, cardiologists, who will discuss heart disease as it relates to diabetes


l Dr. Horacio Rodiles and Dr. Mohammad Berenji, nephrologists, who will discuss kidney disease as it relates to diabetes.

Those considered at higher risk for the disease include people who are: age 45 or older, overweight, have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, have a family history of the disease; and African-Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asian-Americans or Pacific Islanders.

Diabetes Day is an educational service provided by GlaxoSmithKline.
