50 years ago — Chinese residents of the Imperial Valley, through W.S. Wong and Harry Mah, both of El Centro and chairman and vice chairman, respectively, of the Imperial Valley Chinese Association, have sent a letter to the president assuring him of their loyalty to America.

40 years ago — For her work with Valley youths through 4-H, the Cub Scouts, Sunday school and other activities, Mrs. Lucille Purdy has been awarded the ninth annual Youth Service Award trophy by El Centro Optimist Club.

30 years ago — A North Island Naval Air Station helicopter carrying two doctors and two nurses from University of California, San Diego Medical Hospital flew a 2-day-old premature baby from El Centro Community Hospital to the UCSD hospital.

20 years ago — Construction of the much-delayed industrial park in El Centro will begin this week following final federal approval, according to City Manager Abdel Salem. The federal Economic Development Agency on Monday gave final approval of the city's choice of contractor for off-site improvements on the park.
