Youth Sports/Recreation roundup: MABL opens season

The Imperial Valley Men's Adult Baseball League opened its spring season last weekend.

In first-week action the Astros topped the Red Sox 9-8, the Toros beat the Cardinals 7-4 and the Devil Dogs knocked off the Yankees 5-3.

Gary Wong was the catalyst for the Toros. He had three hits and pitched three scoreless innings. Jose Salcido earned the win for the Toros.

Despite a grand slam by Tony Gonzalez, the Astros held off the Red Sox. Brian Kostal earned the win for the Astros.


Carmello Ruiz led the Devil Dogs past the IVSL's defending champions, the Yankees. He blasted two doubles.

The IVSL season will continue to June with games at Central Union and Southwest high schools in El Centro.

Brawley Gladiator wrestling

CLOVIS — Brawley Gladiator junior wrestler Rusty Garcia won the novice light-heavyweight division at the Kids Folkstyle state championships here over the weekend.

Brawley's Ronnie Hernandez took third at 85 pounds in the midget division.

Also in the novice class, Brawley's Frank Corona (heavyweight) placed fourth and Chauncy Rowe (105) was fourth.

In the schoolboy division Brawley's Lorenzo Soto (95) took sixth.

Calipatria Rebels wrestling

Two Calipatria Rebel junior wrestlers earned firsts at a meet recently.

Calipatria's Issac Gomez (215) took first as did Rayha Leon (120).

Calipatria's Nickalas Atondo (65) took second, Daniel Vanvores (75) was fifth, Joseph Hill (100) and Jonathan Vista (90) finished sixth, Jacob Gonzalez took eighth and Robby Landeros (90) and Jesse Martinez (95) took ninth.
