Calexico and Central finish 2-2 at Cibola tournament

YUMA — The Calexico High School baseball team wrapped up play in the Cibola tournament here Saturday by defeating Coconino High of Flagstaff, Ariz., 6-2.

Leading Calexico was Pedro Casarez, who threw a complete game and gave up three hits and struck out five. Casarez also went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.

On Friday, Calexico lost to Mountain View High of Mesa, Ariz., 9-8 in 13 innings.

Juan Lopez got the loss, pitching the final 6 1/3 innings and giving up three runs and striking out three. J.P. Gonzalez pitched 6 2/3 innings for Calexico, striking out seven and allowing six runs and eight hits.

Diego Lopez led the Bulldogs offense, going 3-for-6, falling a home run shy of the cycle. He had three RBIs. Hector Rivera was 2-for-5 with an RBI and Damian Lopez went 2-for-6 for Calexico, which finished 2-2 in the tournament.


Said Bulldog coach Sergio Rubio: "We got some pretty good pitching in this tournament and offensively, we were able to hit the ball well. I think our guys did very well."

Calexico will host Central Union at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Central at Cibola tourney

YUMA — The Central Union High baseball team closed play in the Cibola tournament by losing 14-4 to Mountain View High School of Mesa, Ariz., in a semifinal game here Saturday.

Leading Central was Humberto Cardenas, who went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Danny Vasquez finished 2-for-2 for the Spartans, who went 2-2 in the tournament.

On Friday, the Spartans were victorious in both of their games.

In the first game Central shut out Chaparral High School of Las Vegas 2-0. Getting the win for the Spartans was Jose Ibarra, who pitched a complete game, striking out seven and allowing three hits.

Humberto Cardenas was 2-for-3 and knocked in both Central runs.

In their second game, the Spartans defeated Cocanino of Flagstaff, Ariz., 9-8 despite committing five errors.

Cardenas got the win, pitching the final inning and striking out the side.

Southwest 5, Flagstaff 2

YUMA — The Southwest High baseball team closed play in the Cibola tournament on a winning note Saturday, defeating Flagstaff High 5-2.

Leading Southwest was pitcher Mario Gastelum, who threw a complete game, striking out five, giving up only one hit and not allowing any earned runs.

Southwest's David Cordova was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run and Eric Flores finished 2-for-3 with two runs for the Eagles, who went 1-3 in the tournament.

Southwest (2-6-1) will host Brawley at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Coachella 6, Holtville 1

HOLTVILLE — The Holtville High baseball team lost its first game of the year Friday, falling 6-1 to Coachella High.

Edward Castro got the loss for Holtville, going five innings and allowing one earned run on five hits. He struck out three.

Luis Avila went 1-for-3 with a stolen base and a run and Don Mejia was 1-for-2 for the Vikings.

Holtville (3-1) plays at Imperial at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
