Imperial and Holtville shut out opponents

IMPERIAL — The Imperial High School softball team hammered Antelope High of Welton, Ariz., 25-0 in five innings Wednesday.

Picking up the win for Imperial was Lindsay Lugo as she pitched all five innings, striking out eight and giving up only one hit. Lugo finished 2-for-3 at the plate with four runs and an RBI.

Leading the Tiger offense, which scored 14 in the first frame, was Andrea Thompson, who went 3-for-5 with two home runs, four runs and four RBIs. Serena Item went 2-for-3 with a run for Imperial (2-0 overall). Every Tiger player finished with at least one hit.

Said Tiger coach Kim Witte: "After having a few games rained out last week we were ready to start hitting. In a game like this it's easy for a team to not concentrate, but our girls stayed disciplined at the plate, which I was happy with."


Imperial plays at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday at Holtville.

Holtville 10, Calipatria 0

HOLTVILLE — Led by Lauren Huyler, the Holtville High School softball team shut out Calipatria High 10-0 here Saturday.

Huyler pitched a complete game, striking out 11 and walking three. She also finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Cindy Lopez went 2-for-2 with an RBI and Maricela Valenzuela was 1-for-1 with two RBIs for Holtville.

Calipatria will play at Midway Baptist in San Diego at 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Women's softball

Grossmont 6, IVC 4

EL CAJON — The Imperial Valley College softball team dropped its third Pacific Coast Conference game of the year, falling 6-4 to Grossmont College here Friday.

Michelle Briseño suffered the loss for IVC (8-7 overall, 2-3 PCC).

Leading the Arab offense was Erika Baxter, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

IVC will play at Palomar College in San Marcos in a doubleheader starting at noon Tuesday.
