Voice: Good illegal immigration input from the other side

March 19, 2001

This morning I happened to tune in to cable Channel 3 from Mexicali. At that moment they were showing what we would call here a public service message. What makes this so unusual is that it was about those attempting to enter the United States and placing their lives at risk while doing so.

The message showed someone trying to jump the border fence. Also were scenes taken in mountain snow showing people, obviously tired, sitting on some rocks; a Border Patrol officer locating a man passed out on a mountain path; people trying to cross the desert and swimmers fighting the canal current. The message was titled "Mide El Riesgo" (Measure the Risk) and came across very well.

I don't know who sponsored or prepared the message, but I sincerely hope that many of those considering crossing the canals, snowy mountains or arid deserts see it before deciding it's the right thing to do. Too many have lost their lives while enriching some unscrupulous "coyotes" who probably couldn't care less.

This is the kind of positive interaction that I welcome from both sides of the border.
