Imperial woman, two children injured in crash on Highway 111

March 19, 2001|By KELLY GRANT, Staff Writer

A woman and two children were injured when their vehicle collided with a truck trailer on Highway 111 Sunday afternoon.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Susan D. Deen, 40, of Imperial, was driving south on Highway 111 sometime before 4:40 p.m. when her vehicle drifted to the right onto the asphalt shoulder.

When Deen realized she was going off the roadway toward some impact attenuators and a jersey wall, she overcorrected by steering the vehicle abruptly to the left, according to a Highway Patrol press release.

Deen lost control of her vehicle and went into the northbound lane where Sergio Salgado, 40, of Brawley, was driving a tractor-trailer rig.

Salgado saw Deen's vehicle coming toward him and swerved right but Deen's vehicle collided with the rear axles of the trailer. The impact sent Deen's vehicle back into the southbound lane, where it collided with the concrete jersey wall.

Deen sustained moderate injuries and complained of pain to her abdomen. Two passengers in her vehicle, a 13-year-old boy and a 12-year-old boy, both of Imperial, sustained minor injuries, including abrasions.

A third passenger in Deen's vehicle, a 16-year-old Imperial boy, and Salgado were uninjured.
