Charges filed in Calexico shooting incident

March 20, 2001|By KELLY GRANT, Staff Writer

CALEXICO — The charges against three men arrested on suspicion of attempted murder stemming from a drive-by shooting here Thursday have been changed to shooting at an inhabited dwelling.

Genaro Lemus Jr., 21, and Juan German Lemus, 25, both of Calexico, and Ramon Castro, 20, of El Centro are suspected of having fired shots at a house on the 1100 block of Milpitas Street shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday.

Calexico police Sgt. Armando Marquez said charges were likely changed because no one was injured in the shooting. No further update on the case was available this morning, Marquez said.

Calexico police officers detained the three men after a cross-town car chase ended when the sedan the men were in hit a tree in the 700 block of Matallana Street on the west side of town.

A search of the pursuit's path produced a semi-automatic rifle thought to have been the weapon in the incident.

The men also are charged with a misdemeanor count of destroying or concealing documentary evidence.

The three men were still in the county jail at press time this morning.
