Eagles take IVL opener from 'Dogs

The Southwest High School tennis team topped Calexico 11-7 to open Imperial Valley League play in El Centro on Monday.

The Eagles (3-2, 1-0) got a strong showing from their doubles teams.

Southwest's No. 1 team, Randy Lyon/Greg Lyon, earned three set wins as did the No. 2 duo, Ramon Osa/John Bonano.

The Lyons beat Calexico's No. 1 Sammy Garcia/Andre Barros (6-1), No. 2 Anthony Castellanos/Steve Rivera (6-1) and No. 3 Hua Feng Kuan/Jair Hernandez (6-1). The Osa/Bonano team was triumphant 7-6, 6-1, 6-1. The Eagles No. 3 squad of Glen Shummard/Joe Kaye won twice, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Southwest's singles players did not fare as well. No. 1 Jared Kaye managed one set win. He fell to Calexico's No. 1 Chris Cota (0-6) and No. 2 Miguel Cota (1-6) but defeated No. 3 Joseph Alvarez 6-0.

The scores were similar for the Eagles' No. 2, Bobby Romero, and No. 3, Anand Gupta. Romero won once 1-6, 2-6, 6-2 as did Gupta 0-6, 1-6, 7-6.

"The doubles came through and did the job they had to do," said Southwest coach Genaro PiƱeiro. "This was a good match by Calexico and a good day for tennis."

Both teams return to action at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Southwest will be at Brawley while Calexico will return to El Centro to take on Central.
