New mayor will be selected during council meeting

WESTMORLAND — A new mayor will be chosen during the City Council meeting here Wednesday.

Mayor Thomas Marquez's term has expired. The council member chosen by his colleagues to be mayor will appoint a mayor pro tem. The current mayor pro tem is Henry Halcon.

Before the selection of a new mayor, the city Redevelopment Agency will elect a new chairman. Councilman John Makin is the RDA chairman.

The RDA meeting is set to start at 6:30 p.m. while the regular council meeting will start at 7 p.m.

During the RDA meeting, board members, who are the city councilmen, will vote whether to give permission to RDA Executive Director Mike Gaston of the Holt Group of El Centro to send out a request for proposals to any firm interested in building a proposed 25-bed residential drug and alcohol treatment facility for women.

The Holt Group provides engineering and consulting services to the city.

Gaston said the request for proposals doesn't mean board members are pursuing the project. City officials have not decided yet whether to allow for such a treatment facility to be built in the city.

Gaston said the agenda item will probably be tabled until city officials can provide more information about the facility to the public.

The council had a special public hearing Wednesday regarding the facility.

Community members said they wanted more information about the proposed facility and the problems it could cause.

The council decided it would try to answer those and other questions during a later meeting.
