Farm labor bus destroyed by fire east of Heber

HEBER — A farm labor bus was destroyed by fire Tuesday when it became engulfed at the intersection of Heber and Barbara Worth roads east of here.

At 6:57 p.m., firefighters from Imperial County Fire Department station No. 2 in Heber responded to the vehicle fire, finding the bus fully involved upon arrival, said county fire Capt. Lon Hettinger.

Bus driver Luis Jose Castro of Calexico, whose age was not available, was the only person on the bus at the time of the fire. He exited the vehicle safely.

According to fire officials at the Heber substation, the cause of the bus fire is unknown. However, officials said it started in the vehicle's engine compartment.

The vehicle was a total loss, the value of which the owner estimates was $7,500, Hettinger said.

Firefighters had the blaze under control within five minutes and extinguished within 30 minutes, he added.

No injuries were reported.
