Voice: Hey, gay bashers, there are bigger issues out there

March 21, 2001

I am a native daughter of the Imperial Valley. I utilize the Imperial Valley Press Web site to stay informed about Valley events. I read a few of the letters that have criticized the young man who voiced his opinion about gays.

I currently reside in Virginia and it saddens me to see how closed-minded some have chosen to be. If a person chooses a lifestyle that does not agree with the "righteous," that person is free to make that choice, without persecution. As long as they follow the laws and do not push their views on others, they have not violated the rights of others.

I live in a large military community and I see the hardships these men and women endure to secure these rights. It is a slap in the face to those who defend this country and uphold our right to have a choice. This is not the land of the "straight and righteous." It's the land of the "free and the brave."

Sexual preference does not exclude you from being a contributing member to society. Look at the great artists and minds of history. Many were gay but they had great things to contribute. They had to overcome obstacles and they made our lives better and richer, in spite of it.

The truly righteous know that God will sit in judgment of everyone. We have bigger crosses to carry. Racism, homelessness and poverty are just a few. What a person does with their body and how they express their love for another is their right, not a privilege to be taken away at will.
