Voice: Story on dismissal of Central teacher not done thoroughly

March 22, 2001

I realize that your staff writer was not given much in the way of statements from Central Union High School administration, but the article she wrote Friday ("Dismissal of CUHS history teacher) made it sound like Mr. Marquez had done something inappropriate.

He hasn't done anything wrong! All the teachers were on one-year contracts, and Principal Jones decided not to renew them, and the kids found out he wasn't coming back next year.

"It's a personnel issue," Mr. Fragale was quoted as saying. To say the kids were upset would be an understatement. Mr. Marquez himself was blown away at the reaction of the kids. He was asked to leave in an attempt to defuse a volatile situation. That's it.

It was negligent on the administration's part to not comment on Mr. Marquez's leaving from the school campus and the issue of not returning for the remainder of the year. It is clearly a ploy to put Mr. Marquez in a negative light. They know darn well what people who don't know him will say or assume that he did something inappropriate. Even though there is nothing actually stated about his conduct, there is just a big enough hole there for people to assume the worst. And you and I know that they will.

I strongly urge that your writers next time better go through hell and high water to get more facts and information before they put out a story that has the potential of ruining a good man's reputation.
