Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight in Hems Bros. Mortuary chapel in El Centro for Maria Orozco de Mendez, 80, of El Centro, who died Friday in El Centro Regional Medical Center. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m.

Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Friday in Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in El Centro with the Rev. Jaime Escobedo officiating.

Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery in Calexico.

Mrs. Mendez was born Oct. 20, 1920, in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. She came to the United States in 1970 and lived in Burbank until 1977. She moved to the Imperial Valley in 1985 and resided in El Centro for 16 years. She was a homemaker.


Survivors include her companion, Charlie Ortiz of El Centro; daughters, Enedina Fuentes of Heber and Angelina Perez of Santa Ana; and nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two sisters in Mexico.


A military honors memorial service will be at 11 a.m. March 29 in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma for Russell M. Brodbeck Jr., 80, of Ramona, a longtime Imperial Valley resident who died Saturday in his home.

Mr. Brodbeck was born in Gallatin, Mo., in 1920. He came to the Imperial Valley to help his father in the dairy business in 1935.

In 1937, Mr. Brodbeck joined the U.S. Army for two years, then rejoined in 1944 during World War II. He served in the Red Arrow Division of the 126th Field Artillery Battalion in New Guinea, Southern Philippines and Luzon.

Upon his return from the war, Mr. Brodbeck began working as a zanjero for the Imperial Irrigation District's water department, first in Niland and then in Imperial. He retired after 37 years of service.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine Brodbeck of Ramona; sons, Edwin Brodbeck of Barstow and Bill Brodbeck of Kailua Kona, Hawaii; daughters Katie Donaldson of Ramona, Trudy Brodbeck of Kailua Kona and Betty Schmidt of Vista; sister, Kay Robinson of Ramona; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
