Eagles knock off Spartans

March 24, 2001

The Southwest High School tennis team stopped Central 10-8 at Central on Friday.

Southwest's doubles teams led the effort.

Southwest's No. 1 team of Randy Lyon/Greg Lyon was perfect, defeating the Spartans' No. 1 squad of Michael Salgado/Sam Kim (6-0), No. 2 Peter Barthleme/Eddie Figueroa (6-2) and No. 3 Kar Lin Chee/Hector Mercado (6-0).

The Eagles' No. 2 squad of Ramon Osa/Bobby Romero swept 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 while No. 3 Joe Kaye/Glen Shummard won twice 7-5, 3-6, 6-0.

The Eagles' No. 1 singles player, John Bonano, stopped Central's No. 1, Ricky Montero, (6-3) and No. 2, Leo Alvarado (6-2) but fell to the Spartans' No. 3, Tony Avila (3-6).

Southwest's No. 2, Jared Kaye, was swept 3-6, 1-6, 2-6 as was No. 3 Anand Gupta 1-6, 1-6, 0-6.

Both teams will be back in action Monday. Southwest will host Yuma at 3:15 p.m. Central will travel to Brawley at 4:30 p.m.
