March 24, 2001|By KELLY GRANT, Staff Writer

WINTERHAVEN — A Yuma man was being held in the Imperial County jail Saturday on suspicion of sexually abusing multiple juveniles here.

Russell Maurice Mills, 40, was already in the county jail for an unrelated misdemeanor this week when Imperial County Sheriff's Office Investigator Larry Markham booked Mills for the additional offenses Thursday, Sheriff's Sgt. Sharon Stogner said Friday.

According to sheriff's records, Mills was booked into the jail Thursday at 10:41 p.m. on suspicion of continuous sexual abuse of a child.

Stogner said Mills faces several counts, including oral copulation involving multiple juveniles ranging in age from 9-12.

Stogner did not know how many juveniles were involved, how long the abuse lasted or how the victims were related to the suspect.

Markham, who was unavailable for comment Friday, had been working on the case prior to Thursday and got the complaint against Mills approved just before he was due for release on the other count, Stogner said.
