50 years ago — A total of 48 of 500 vehicles inspected in a California Highway Patrol test in Imperial had faulty brakes and 35 caused the owners to be cited.

40 years ago — The El Centro chapter of the Red Cross will begin an intensive week-long drive to fill its quota of $13,500. Volunteer workers, who will visit the business places and call upon individuals, have collected $4,095.

30 years ago — The big air show and open house Sunday at El Centro Air Facility, expected to draw at least 17,000 persons, will officially mark the end of the 1971 winter training season for the Navy's precision-flying Blue Angels team.

20 years ago — El Centro's level of police protection could be in jeopardy if the department doesn't get additional officers, according to Police Chief Hugh Keating. The department has been forced to ignore many minor incidents, complaints and traffic violations to concentrate in serious in-progress crimes because of lack of staff, Keating said.
