Arabs lose in semis at Rio Hondo

SOUTHGATE — The Imperial Valley College softball team wrapped up play in the 11-team Rio Hondo tournament here Sunday with a 5-1 semifinal loss to Southwestern College.

Taking the loss for IVC was Michelle Briseño. Adela Green went 2-for-3 with a double for IVC.

The Arabs advanced to the semis with a 17-2 thrashing of San Bernardino, with Jenny Briseño earning the win. Green finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and Jenny Burgos chipped in a 1-for-2 performance with two RBIs.

IVC kicked off play Saturday with a 5-4 win over Cerro Coso. Michelle Briseño picked up the win and Burgos finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

In their second game, the Arabs fell 3-2 to East Los Angeles College. Mariel Martinez led the IVC offense, going 2-for-3. Jenny Briseño took the loss.

IVC rounded out play Saturday with a 2-2 tie with the University of Southern California club team. Martinez led the Arabs, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Kristy Morales went 2-for-3 with a double and Jenny Briseño chipped in a 2-for-2 performance.

IVC (11-11-1 overall, 3-5 Pacific Coast Conference) plays at Southwestern College in Chula Vista at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
