March 27, 2001|By LAURA MACKENZIE, Staff Writer

IMPERIAL — The Imperial Unified School District has received a $120,000 grant from the state.

The "English Language and Intensive Literacy Program" grant will be used to fund after-school and summer school programs for students learning English.

"The goal of the grant is to move students out of the English-language program to fully English-proficient classrooms," said Tom Gregory, director of instruction for the school district.

There are 609 English-language learners in the district.

Gregory said the district is seeking a coordinator for the program and is beginning the process for teachers to apply to teach in the after-school and summer school programs.
