March 28, 2001|By KELLY GRANT, Staff Writer

WINTERHAVEN — A Yuma man was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center on Tuesday after sustaining injuries in a traffic collision on the Fourth Avenue bridge.

A van driven by Eugene Goecker, 77, of Clarinda, Iowa, was exiting Interstate 8 eastbound at the Winterhaven Drive/Fourth Avenue exit shortly after 9 a.m., said California Highway Patrol Officer Ray Arredondo.

After stopping at the top of the ramp, Goecker began to make a left turn onto Fourth Avenue when his van struck a sedan traveling south on Fourth Avenue, Arredondo said.

The sedan's driver, Gene Peschi, 68, of Yuma, complained of pain to his head, neck and chest. He was transported to Yuma Regional, where he was treated and released that afternoon, Arredondo said.

Goecker and his passenger, Phyllis Goecker, 63, of Clarinda, Iowa, were uninjured, Arredondo said.

The use of seat belts by all three prevented serious injury, Arredondo reported.
