March 28, 2001|By MARIO RENTERÍA, Staff Writer

A 40-year-old El Centro woman ran her vehicle into palm trees Tuesday evening in what police think could have been an alcohol-related accident.

The woman, whose identity was not available this morning, hit two palm trees about 8:30 p.m. on Fifth Street between Park Avenue and Adams Avenue in El Centro.

A witness told police he was waiting in his vehicle at the south stop sign on the intersection of Adams Avenue and Fifth Street when he noticed the woman's vehicle approaching him from behind at an unsafe speed.

The woman swerved to her right to miss a car and her vehicle hit a palm tree, bounced off and hit a second tree, smashing the front end of her four-door vehicle.

She was trapped inside the vehicle until firefighters and paramedics could extract her. She was taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center. Information on her condition was not available.

The driver was not wearing a seat belt.

The accident is still under investigation.
