Eagles breeze past Scots

Southwest High School ruined Vincent Memorial's trip to El Centro by knocking off the Scots 16-2 in a boys tennis match here Wednesday.

Southwest played well overall but had doubles play to thank for the victory as it swept doubles sets 6-0.

"Our doubles teams ripped it today," said Southwest coach Genrao Pineiro. "They came out here with a mission and played together for a perfect 54-0 score against their opponents."

Ramon Osa came off the court with a grin after completing his sweep with his partner, Bobby Romero.

"The win felt really good," Osa said. "Everything was working today and we got a few aces."

He said he was pleased with his team's performance.

"We're really starting to gel," Osa said. "We just need to work on keeping everything working and we need to stay focused on our opponents."

Romero said it felt good to dominate the Scots.

The Eagles' No. 2 team of Romero and Osa joined No. 1 team Randy Lyon and Greg Lyon and No. 3 team Joseph Kaye and Kareem Salem in the sweep of Vincent's pairs, No. 1 Felipe Bustamonte/Alejandro Roldar and No. 2 David Ptacnik/Fabian Cuevaz. The Scots did not have a third doubles duo.

In singles Southwest's No. 1, John Bonano, won his sets 6-3, 6-1, 6-0.

The Eagles, No. 2, Jared Kaye and, No. 3, Idrees Suliman both won two of three sets. Kaye's results were 4-6, 6-0, 6-2, and Suliman's were 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

The Scots' only points came thanks to No. 1 Juan Lopez, who beat Kaye and Suliman.

Vincent's No. 2 was Rogelio Olmos and No. 3 was Ernesto Rocha.

"Vincent has some good singles players," Pineiro said. "It was good practice for us today."

"The league title is going to come down to singles play," Pineiro added.

The Eagles improved their overall record to 5-4 and will travel to Calexico for a 4:30 p.m. match Monday. Vincent will be back in action at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Central in El Centro.

Calexico 15, Brawley 3

CALEXICO — The Calexico High School tennis team topped Brawley 15-3 here Wednesday.

The Bulldogs' No. 1, Chris Cota, knocked off Brawley's No. 1, Doug Williams (6-1), No. 2, Gilles Vigili (6-2), and No. 3, Mike Garcia (6-1).

Calexico's No. 2, Miguel Cota, met with similar success winning 6-2, 6-0, 6-2 as did No. 3 Samuel Garcia, who won 6-0, 6-4, 6-0.

The Bulldogs' No. 1 doubles team, Anthony Castellanos/Juan Gallardo, swept, beating Brawley's No. 1 Jacob Amidon/Devon Stills (6-1), No. 2 Enrique Sanchez/Roberto Fernandez (6-4) and No. 3 Matt Reyes/Juan Carlos Mendoza (6-1).

Calexico's No. 2 Andre Barros/Steve Rivera won twice 6-4, 6-4, 4-6. No. 3 Joseph Alvarez/Jesus Leo picked up one win 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 4-6.
