Imperial Valley College was host to the annual English Challenge for local high school students Wednesday.
The two-part program consists of a writing competition and a festival, during which the winners of the writing competition are awarded and the IVC Foundation's English scholarship recipients are announced.
Coordinated by the English division of IVC, the English Challenge has been an annual event since 1984.
"We want students to see what the IVC English division has to offer," said Kathleen Dorantes, an IVC English instructor.
During the writing competition, students write essays, short fiction and poetry.
English as a second language students in the English Challenge are tested on their abilities in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
The festival consists of an authors' forum and a language "Jeopardy" contest.
Authors Jennifer Redmond, Russel Redmond, Choral Pepper and Graham Mackintosh were the speakers Wednesday.
"It was very well-received," said Fred Fischer, English division chair. "The authors gave a most interesting presentation and the students really responded well."
