The Imperial and Calipatria state prison chapters of the Chicano Correctional Workers Association are set to celebrate Cesar Chavez's birthday on Saturday at Swarthout Park in El Centro.

The event will be from 1 to 10 p.m.

Margaret Gandara, president of the Imperial chapter of CCWA, said, "We wanted to celebrate Chavez's birthday and hopefully it will bring the community together. It's a big boost of morale for the people."

The event will include food booths and displays.

The displays will include Harley motorcycles, cars from La Gente Car Club and more.

Sabor Latino will be playing, along with two mariachi groups. High Society will DJ all day. KXO 107.5 FM will broadcast from the event all day.

High school senior girls from the Imperial Valley will compete in a pageant. The girl who sells the most raffle tickets will be crowned the queen.

The girl crowned queen will get to keep half of her ticket sales as a scholarship. The rest of the contestants will get to keep 25 percent of their ticket sales.

Items to be raffled include gift certificates and products from various businesses in the Imperial Valley.

"We hope it becomes a tradition where we can get the whole community involved in celebrating and appreciating what life has come to be, for all the races, and come together and celebrate what we have right now," said Gandara.
