Swimming: Wildcat girls continue to dominate

The Brawley Union High School girls swim team dominated Southwest High while the boys weren't too far behind Thursday at the Central Union High pool.

The Brawley girls (6-0 overall, 2-0 in the Imperial Valley League) won the meet 130-46 while the Wildcat boys won 105-49.

Stephanie Luckey, Brooke Pace, Jennifer Cardenas and Lauren Roberts won the 200-meter medley relay in 2:79.

Roberts took the 200 freestyle (2:45) and the 500 freestyle (6:49).

Cardenas won the 200 individual medley (2:45) and the 100 butterfly (1:13).

In the 50 freestyle, first place was a tie between Brawley's Denae Smith and Marianne Wenzel (0:31).

The 200 freestyle relay was won by Cardenas, Wenzel, Smith and Roberts (2:05).

Smith won the 100 backstroke (1:19) and Pace took the 100 breaststroke (1:20) and 100 freestyle (1:06).

Wenzel, Smith, Tracy King and Pace won the 400 meter freestyle (4:40).

Southwest falls to 2-2, 0-1 with the loss.

In the meet among the boys varsity squads, Southwest (1-3 overall, 0-1 league) only won three events.

The Eagles' Robert Boniface took the 50 freestyle (0.20) and the 100 butterfly (1:10). The team of Boniface, T.J. Wilson, Andreas Mills and Chuck Ainza won the 400 meter freestyle relay (5:08).

Brawley (4-2, 2-0) dominated the meet.

Brawley's Robbie Overstreet, Spencer Kellogg, Danny Sims and Mark McConnell won the 200 medley relay (2:16) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:54).

Overstreet took the 200 freestyle (2:22) and the 100 breaststroke (1:25).

McConnell took the 200 individual medley (2:54) and the 100 backstroke (1:17).

Kellogg won the 100 freestyle (1:06).

D'Ann Lucky, co-head coach for the Wildcats, said, "We did exceptionally well. Several girls made consideration time for CIF."

Nancy Kellogg, co-head coach for the Wildcats, said, "The boys worked well as a team."

Eagles head coach Scott Fullerton said, "We did OK. We knew Brawley was going to be tough."

Brawley will face Imperial at 4 p.m. Thursday at Imperial Valley College while Southwest will face Central at 4 p.m. Thursday at Central's pool in El Centro.

Tigers-Spartans split

IMPERIAL — The Imperial High School and Central Union swim teams split a meet at IVC here Thursday.

The Imperial boys earned a 92-69 win while the Spartan girls were victorious 91-80.

Central's John Kramer, Fabian Amparano, Ira Risin and David Torrez won the 200 medley relay.

Amparano won the 50 freestyle and the 100 breastroke. Torrez took the 200 freestyle.

Cesar Garcia, Torrez, Kramer and Amparano won the 400 relay.

Imperial's John Gordon won the 200 individual medley relay.

Imperial's Jonathan Dale won the 100 butterfly and the 500 freestyle. The Tigers' Guillermo Gonzalez won the 100 meter freestyle. Tommy Dale took the 100 meter backstroke.

Blake Seeger, Tommy Dale, Tony Deen and Gonzalez teamed to win the 200 meter freestyle relay.

The Tiger boys improved to 1-0 in the IVL while Central falls to 0-2 in league.

The Spartan girls were led by a strong performance by Minnie Flores.

Flores won the 100 butterfly and the 500 freestyle. She teamed with Charity Oakley, Kristy Kramer and Danielle Hewitt to win the 400 freestyle relay.

Central's Hewitt, Oakley, Christina Barraza and Nikki Betv won 200 freestyle relay.

Oakley won the 200 freestyle and Kramer took the 50 freestyle.

Imperial's Heather Jackson, Savannah Armstrong, Cleme Vargas and Erika Valle won the 200 medley relay.

Jackson won the 200 individual medley relay and the 100 backstroke.

Armstrong won the 100 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke.
