Central boys win at Eastlake

CHULA VISTA — The Central Union High School boys track team won their division at the Eastlake Relays at Eastlake High School here Saturday.

The Spartans were led by the team of Robert Gueib, Felix Gueib, Alfredo Gonzalez and Hipolito Valdez. The foursome won the distance medley (11 minutes, 43 seconds) and the 4x800 (8:57).

Gonzalez teamed with J.D. Gaddis, Wolfgang Steuer and Mike Garcia to win the low hurdle relay (1:06.60).

Anthony Hellum took second in the 100 (11.2). The team of Eric Henderson, Martin Garcia, Aaron Garcia and John Rodriguez won the 9-10 progressive relay (3:36).

The Southwest High boys team took sixth in Division II.

Jose Luis Salazar took second in the 300 hurdles (43.0). Doug Fulp was third in the 3200 (4:51).

The Spartan girls finished seventh at the meet while the Eagles were fifth.

Central got a third-place finish from the team of Ezra Salazar, Rhea Bettencourt and Elizabeth Lechuga in the long jump (33 feet 7 inches).


Southwest's Caroline Dessert won the discus (104-4).

The Eagle team of Erica Holmes, Meesa Maeng and Stephanie Conant won the long jump (36-4.5). Holmes was second individually in the long jump.

Southwest's Jennifer Eyer took fourth in the 3200 (6:18) and Krystal Rodriguez was third in the high jump (4-4).

The team of Rodriguez, Gamalia Shelton and Jennifer Black took second in the high jump (12-6) while the team of Holmes, Maeng, Monica Gamboa and Tatia Ernest were second in the 9-10 4x200.

Central will be back in action at 3:15 p.m. Thursday when the Spartans host a three-way meet with Imperial and Holtville. Southwest will also return to action Thursday at Palo Verde.
